6~ Still Not Sick Of You - Other People - American Princes - 2008

You can let your heart beat liberally

You can pour it all in me, and we can see that

Either way you place it, you can't face it

Draw another outline around your dream

If anyone counted with all of us

Who stood by aimlessly

If anyone counted with all of us

With you and me and all the absentees

You can fix the outcome, cure your boredom

Somehow we all end up numb, we'll never come

But either way you planned it, you can't stand it

Monitor the record and fill your column

If anyone counted with all of us

Who stood by aimlesslyIf anyone counted with all of us

With you and me and all the absentees

You can't change yourself, you can't change the war

Fell in love with the war, fell in love with the war

If anyone counted with all of us

Who stood by aimlessly

If anyone counted with all of us

With you and me and all the absentees

Na Na Na Na Na Na Na Na Na

NaNa Na Na Na Na Na Na

Around this time a year ago we published the video for Wasted Year directed by Henson Flye. When we had talked to Henson about doing a video he said he was interested in doing his own take on the existential themes of the song. Specifically, he wanted to build a model of a detention facility and film inside it. To us, this idea sounded fantastic, and we gave the green light.

Periodically, Henson would call with updates, tell us what was going well, what was time consuming, and which parts were quickly becoming the bane of his existence (something about a pillow). Then, David spent a weekend out in San Francisco and decided to drop by and take a look at the model Henson was going to film in. I can scarcely remember a more excited phone call from David. He'd seen the set and it was incredible, he said.

Shortly after this Henson sent along what he called "something between a rough-draft and a rough-cut." Really, it was the entire video, shot by shot, although many frames didn't contain any characters or animation. The setting was amazing, just panning shots of austere prison cells, green-tinged security camera footage, and a tank with fingers for treads, all set around a high-rise prison cracked in half.

I couldn't exactly determine the exact plot-line from this cut. But, I could tell it was all building to some climactic point at about 2:20, when I could see Henson standing beside the detention-facility model waving around what to me looked to be a welding torch. Henson's attitude about the video at that point was pretty subdued, but we all knew he was on to something amazing. And we weren't disappointed when just a few weeks later he sent us the final edit.

His rendition of detainees coping with the hopelessness of endless imprisonment seemed eerily insightful. How do the detainees communicate? Is there a terrifying mutual response to such a dire situation? Perhaps. Or is this just a reflection on the overwhelming isolation, which is itself one of the tools used by our military to "break" detainees.

Yesterday the new CIA director Leon Panetta announced that we would be shutting down our foreign secret detention facilities and would no longer use "rendition" nor "abusive" tactics such as water-boarding. We hope this is true. But detention and isolation alone are enough to drive a person to insanity.

In our minds Henson's Wasted Year video deals with the truly existential question: how does one live in isolation, disorientation, or confusion, where absurdity and meaninglessness hold sway? Our interpretation is that maybe his answer is not bleak: that in the end, one must struggle to find meaning in the most dire situations. Because without that, what hope do any of us have? Then again, perhaps he leaves the question as unanswered as we do in the song. Is there truly no exit?
Nos estamos viendo en el próximo posteo. ¡Que todos ustedes tengan un muy buen sábado!
